Pensioner tragically dies after being hit by a truck
An 85-year-old man who was rushed to hospital after he was hit by a truck has died. West Yorkshire Police confirmed the sad news this evening. Police were called just after 3.45pm after the man, aged 85, was hit by the vehicle on Market Place in Heckmondwike .
Several ambulances were at the scene and the man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.
A West Yorkshire Police Force Incident Manager told Examiner Live: “We can confirm that the man taken to hospital has died. “There have been no arrests and we have interviewed the driver of the vehicle involved in the incident. “At present we are asking anyone who witnessed what happened to call 101 and quote log number 1007 of January 8.”
Kirklees Council has confirmed the vehicle involved was not a refuse truck – but the casualty was hit by a large vehicle. The refuse truck at the scene is understood to have blocked the road to allow the emergency crews to get access. A witness at the scene said he was shocked when he saw the man lying in the road.
He said people rushed over to help him and a motorist pulled over and rang 999. He added that a member of the public covered the man with a blanket before a first response vehicle arrived followed by an ambulance.
