M56 updates as motorway shut after man hit by HGV

The M56 was closed this morning after a “serious” collision led to a man’s death. Diversions were in place after the major crash between junctions 14 (Chester Services) and 12 (Liverpool Airport/Runcorn). Both carriageways were initially closed after the incident, just before 6am on Monday, but the westbound carriageway later reopened.

Highways England said the eastbound carriageway was set to be closed for some time, and were encouraging road users to avoid the area. In a tweet Highways England said: “The #M56 eastbound #J14 / Chester Services (#Stanlow#Helsby#A5117) to #J12 (#LiverpoolAirport#Runcorn#Widnes#A557) is in the process of being CLOSED due to a serious collision. “Traffic Officers @CheshireRCU @NWmwaypolice & @NWAmbulance are on their way to the area.”
