M275 northbound in Portsmouth shut 'car falls from motorway' in 'serious' crash

Police are at the incident, along with two support vehicles from South Central Ambulance Service and other medics. Colas workers for Portsmouth City Council have helped shut the access. The stretch was shut for nearly three hours but lanes two and three have reopened, at around 12.50pm.

A car has crashed through a barrier on the M275 northbound and landed on the roundabout below near the city council’s park and ride facility in Tipner on July 15 2020.

Rebecca Hayter, whose home backs onto the motorway, said: ‘There was only one loud noise… and then loads of debris in the air, did not hear any squealing brakes, just the one bang.

A Hampshire police spokesman said: ‘We are currently attending a serious collision, and the M275 northbound has been closed.’

Truck driver rushed to hospital after crash

At 10.30am roads policing officers posted on Twitter and said: ‘M275 closed completely northbound for scene protection. Serious collision. ‘Please use other routes out of Portsmouth.’

They added: ‘M275 north will remain closed whilst evidence is secured and road is made safe. All partners now on scene working. Please use alternative route out of Portsmouth.’

On its website Highways England said: ‘The M275 in Hampshire is closed northbound between the A3 and J1 due to a serious collision which occurred shortly before 10am this morning. ‘Air ambulance attended the scene along with Hampshire police, South Central Ambulance Service and Highways england traffic officers. Hampshire police will be carrying out collision investigation work.

‘Once complete, vehicle recovery and clear-up work can commence. Please note, Hampshire police have also closed the A3 back to Church Street roundabout and diverting traffic on to local roads.’ More to follow.

Latest: A car has crashed through the barrier

A car has crashed through a barrier on the M275 onto the ground below. The vehicle is on its roof at the roundabout near the Park and Ride below as police gather evidence relating to the incident. The condition of any occupants is not currently known.

Here is the diversion route

For traffic leaving the port, road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol. At the Rudmore roundabout take the 3rd exit and join the A3. Travel along the A3 until the A27.

At the roundabout take the 1st exit and join the A27. Follow the A27 until the M27 Junction 12. Turn left, and join the M27.
