Incredible footage captures intensity of huge lorry fire that closed A3

Incredible footage shows the intensity of a huge lorry fire that closed the A3 by the Hindhead Tunnel. Surrey Police, highways crews and firefighters were called to the southbound carriageway at Thursley at around 3.30pm on Friday (July 31). Both southbound and northbound carriageways, and the nearby Hindhead Tunnel, were closed as fire crews battled the flames, which had spread to a neighbouring grass verge.

Northbound reopened at around 7.30pm, while southbound remained closed into the evening. Long queues built up in both directions following the fire and nearby roads became heavily congested. A statement from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service on Friday afternoon said: "We received a call at around 3.30pm to a report of a vehicle fire on the A3 between Thursley and Hindhead, southbound.

"Four fire engines were sent. A lorry had caught fire." Following the fire incredible footage emerged - in the video above - that showed the scale and intensity of the flames.

Flames had engulfed the cabin area and thick black smoke poured into the air. The vehicle affected appears to be a recovery truck. No details have been released by Surrey Police at this stage as to whether the driver or any passengers were injured in the incident.
