British tourist killed in hit-and-run motorbike crash on trip to see girlfriend

A British tourist has been killed in a horror hit-and-run motorcycle crash in Thailand. Lee Farrell, 43, from Taunton, Somerset, had been eating with friends at a restaurant in Nakhon Ratchasima province on Wednesday night. He rode home alone before being hit by a truck which fled the scene – leaving Lee to bleed to death on the ground.

A shocked local noticed the man sprawled face-down on the ground in a pool of blood shortly before midnight. Paramedics arrived at the scene and performed CPR but they were unable to revive Lee and he was pronounced dead. Pictures show how Lee’s damaged motorcycle was toppled over on the ground a few feet from him.

There did not appear to be any helmet near him and pictures show a deep wound on Lee’s head.

Police are now investigating the crash. They believe a truck had knocked Lee off his bike before speeding away from the scene. The Sawangmetta Rescue Foundation said that Lee was taken to the Maharaj Hospital for doctors to perform a post-death examination.

”The injured person did not have a pulse at the scene,” the report stated. ”Volunteers performed CPR while waiting for the resuscitation team but the injured person was later confirmed to be dead.” Police from the Muang district of the city, also known as Korat, confirmed today they were treating the death as a suspected hit-and-run.

They said Lee had arrived in Thailand before the country’s border’s closed due to the coronavirus and had remained in the country. Officers are checking CCTV to try and trace the vehicle suspected of crashing into Lee. Investigating officer, Lieutenant colonel Udon Khadkaew, said: ”The British Embassy has been informed of the death.

The investigation is still early so we are still checking to find CCTV cameras in the area that might have captured it. ”Lee had been here with a three-month visa. He was visiting his Thai girlfriend.

”We are sure that another vehicle hit him causing the crash that killed him. But we don’t know who the driver of that vehicle was.” We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story.
