Main north road closed after car crashes into river

Six people had to escape from a vehicle which was submerged in a north river this afternoon. Emergency services were called to the A99 at the River Freswick, between John O’Groats and Wick, just after 4pm. Police arrived on scene and have since closed a portion of the road, while Coastguard teams from Wick and Duncansby were also there to assist.

A Coastguard helicopter was tasked to attend, but was not required. A spokesman said six people were “accounted for and/ or recovered” prior to the rescue teams’ arrival. He added: “HM Coastguard was called to an incident involving a car which had gone into the River Freswick.

“All casualties were transferred to hospital by land ambulance, although our Coastguard rescue helicopter was sent but was not used to transfer the casualties to hospital.” It is not known how badly injured anyone involved in the crash may have been. Police say local diversions are in place.

Officers are asking anyone with information regarding the crash to contact them on 101, quoting incident 2370 of Sunday, September 6.
