Man knocked through restaurant window in Leicester city centre hit and run

A man was knocked through the window of a restaurant in a suspected hit and run crash in Leicester city centre in the early hours of this morning. The casualty, who is in his 20s, is one of two people “seriously injured” when a blue VW Golf left the road and collided with the pair in Humberstone Road. The hit and run was reported to police shortly after 1am, with third man suffering minor injuries when the vehicle clipped him as it passed.

Video footage recorded at the scene and shared with LeicestershireLive shows a badly injured man lying unconscious in a pool of blood on the ground as a police officer and passers-by tend to him.

The pavement is covered in blood, glass and debris – and a large hole can be seen in the window of the Altro Mondo Italian restaurant. A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “Two people have been seriously injured following a non-stop collision in Humberstone Road, Leicester, during the early hours of this morning. “Officers were called just after 1am following a report that a blue VW Golf car had collided with two male pedestrians who had been stood near a van in the area near the junction with Wharf Street South.

“One of the men, who is in his 20s, fell through a glass door of a nearby premises as a result of the collision. “East Midlands Ambulance Service were in attendance and the two men, one in his 20s and one in his 30s, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.”

Their casualties injuries are not believed to be “life-threatening”. She added: “A third man was also stood near the van at the time of the incident.

The car was reported to have skimmed past the man at the time of the collision causing minor injury. “Two people were reported to have ran from the VW Golf and away from the scene following the incident. “Inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

We ask that people do not speculate while the incident remains under investigation.”

Humberstone Road remained cordoned off by police today as forensic scene of crime officers examined the area for evidence and a recovery truck cleared damaged cars from the road. Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to get in touch with investigators. Detective Inspector Esther Scott said: “We are carrying out full enquiries to locate the two people who left the VW Golf and to establish the full circumstances of this incident including checking CCTV and speaking to witnesses.

“Two men have suffered serious injuries and we are urging the people who were travelling in the VW Golf to make contact with us.” She added: “We are also urging anyone who was in the area and who has not yet spoken to us to make contact to assist our investigation. “If you have any CCTV or any dashcam footage from the area at the time and have not spoken with us, you should also get in touch.

“Officers remain in the area carrying out inquiries and speaking to people in the area.”
