Truck driver hits wall at Tim Hortons restaurant in Chatham

The Tim Hortons restaurant on Third Street across from Chatham-Kent police headquarters is closed after being hit by a truck Saturday.

The Tim Hortons restaurant on Third Street across from Chatham-Kent police headquarters is closed after being hit by a truck Saturday. Damage is estimated at £300,000. The drive-thru remains open.

A male driving through the Tim Hortons parking lot just before 1 p.m. hit a light post in the lot before crossing Third Street and striking a concrete post at the police station. He then continued through the police parking lot, hit another vehicle, crossed the road again and hit a restaurant wall. A building inspector said the structural integrity of the building was unsafe, leading to its closure.

The two people in the truck were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The investigation continues to determine the crash’s cause.

Field damaged

Damage is estimated at £1,000 after someone drove through a corn field on Muirkirk Line in Orford Township on Friday or Saturday night. The suspect also tried unsuccessfully to steal gas from the pumps inside a barn on the property.

Uttering threats

A 33-year-old Dresden man threatened people with a golf club and smashed a window at an apartment building in Dresden on Saturday, police said. He was charged with mischief under £5,000 and two counts of uttering threats.

Break and enter

A 2014 Yamaha Enduro motorcycle valued at £4,000 was stolen from a Church Street garage in Ridgetown on Friday night. Anyone with information can contact Const.

Drug charges

An off-duty Chatham-Kent police officer spotted a man wanted on several warrants inside a Keil Drive business Saturday in Chatham. The man was followed to another business, where more officers arrived to arrest him.

He was found with suspected fentanyl and stolen property, said police, who charged him with drug possession. The 50-year old man of no fixed address was held for a bail hearing.

Outstanding warrants

A 39-year-old Chatham man wanted on an outstanding warrant was found Saturday morning on Riverview Drive in Chatham and was arrested after he tried to flee. On Saturday night, a 33-year-old Ridgetown man wanted on a warrant was arrested after a traffic stop on Isabella Street in Bothwell.

Failing to comply

A 29-year-old Port Lambton man who allegedly breached his probation conditions tried to flee from a Wallaceburg address Saturday before police arrived, but he was found hiding in a nearby bush.

He was held for a bail hearing.
