Authorities have released the name of a truck driver killed in a horrific crash on a Birmingham interstate.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Charles Eugene Pearce Jr. He was 59 and lived in Gulf Shores.

The crash happened shortly after 5 p.m.

Tuesday when authorities say Pearce’s car hauler tractor trailer was involved in a multi-vehicle wreck at the Interstate 65 and Interstate 59/20 interchange.

Pearce was traveling on I-65 southbound when his 18-wheeler left the exit ramp and dropped 25 feet onto I-59/20 northbound.

Pearce was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:37 p.m.

A second motorist was taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The crash, which was in the same area of an accident last week that left the roadway closed for more than 24 hours because of a chemical spill, shut down the interstate for hours.
