Brit 'kills' wife then puts body in camper-van and smashes in HGV in 'suicide'
These are the tangled remains of a horror “suicide” crash after a British camper-van driver smashed into an HGV. Spanish police believe the unnamed driver killed his wife before deliberately taking his own life. The 28-year-old man died instantly when he ploughed into the lorry while travelling on the wrong side of a motorway.
His French wife’s body was discovered in the wreckage of the camper-van after the smash last Friday. A post-mortem revealed the 32-year-old died several days before the crash on the A-381 near Gibraltar. She suffered from head injuries suffered before the crash, Spanish media reported
Spanish Civil Guard investigators are now treating the double tragedy in Los Barrios as a probable murder-suicide. Have you been affected by this story? Email firstname.lastname@example.org

A source said: “It does appear that the driver deliberately crashed his vehicle when his wife was already dead inside.”
Local media reports claim the police probe is now being conducted as a domestic violence investigation. The 43-year-old Spanish driver of the HGV was seriously injured and remains in hospital. A police report points to the camper van travelling the wrong way along the motorway at speed for at least two kilometres before the smash.
Before crashing into the lorry, the driver hurtled through a tunnel. He was travelling south along the north-bound side of the A-381 motorway, which runs between Los Barrios and Jerez, when the head-on collision occurred.
A Civil Guard source said: “Our understanding is the camper van driver has a history of mental health problems and was supposed to be on medication.” Police investigators are also reported to have spoken with witnesses who saw the couple arguing several days before the accident, and around the time detectives suspect the French woman could have been murdered.
Respected regional newspaper Europa Sur reported: “The forensic analysis has determined the woman was not the victim of the crash with the lorry, but suffered a severe head injury before the collision which had destroyed her skull. “The fact she was only travelling in the camper van with her partner, makes investigators suspect she was murdered by the man, who was a person who had been diagnosed as suffering mental health problems. “The investigation points to the driver deliberately smashing into the lorry at high speed with the probable intention of committing suicide, without making any attempt to slow down despite seeing that other vehicles were travelling in an opposite direction to him.”
Although initial reports have pointed to the Brit being 38 and the French woman being 41, conflicting Spanish news reports this afternoon stated he was 28 and she was 32. A court in the port city of Algeciras has been tasked with coordinating the ongoing probe into the incident.
