Heartbreak across Liverpool after pensioner killed in County Road crash

The death of a pensioner after he was hit by a car on County Road has been met with sadness across the city. The man, in his 80s, was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital with his injuries last night. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and is helping Merseyside Police with their enquiries.

The man’s death sparked sympathetic comments on social media as people reacted to the tragic news. Colette Meaney was among the ECHO readers who took to Facebook to express her sympathy, writing: “So sad RIP.” Julie Davies wrote “breaks my heart goodnight sweetie RIP” and Gilly Gardener simply said: “Bless Him.”

Many extended their condolences to the man’s family. Maria Osbaldeston wrote: “Deepest sympathy to his family his rest his soul.” Paula Williams said: “Heartbreaking…

Thinking of the gentleman’s family and friends.” Posts on the ECHO website echoed these thoughts, while some also said they felt for the driver.

One reader pointed out the impact roadworks are having on the area, adding: “So very sad.

County Road is like a war zone all [the] roadworks going on. It’s awful for drivers. Feel very sorry for pedestrians trying to cross.”

A large section of County Road was blocked as emergency services responded to the crash on Thursday night. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm a man in his 80s has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Walton on Thursday evening. “Just after 7pm, it was reported a black VW Polo had been in collision with a male pedestrian on County Road, near to its junction with Newark Street.

“Efforts are ongoing to formally identify the man and inform his next of kin.
