Police in standoff with man on roof of Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital

Police have been in a stand-off with a man on the roof of Devon’s main hospital for several hours. The man has been said to have been on top of the accident and emergency department at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital since 3pm. The road to the area has been closed by Devon and Cornwall Police, as has access to the department.

Ambulances are having to arrive and transfer patients via the hospital’s main entrance. Fire crews – with a ladder truck – and ambulance paramedics have also been in attendance throughout the incident. A witness said that a police drone has also been in use.

It is understood that he is a patient and may have arrived by ambulance earlier in the day. A hospital spokesman refused to comment other than to confirm that a “police incident” was taking place.
He said: “We can confirm that there is a police incident taking place. Police are on site with other emergency services.”

The officer in charge in the police control room confirmed that negotiators were on the scene.
The force incident manager said at about 9pm: “Officers are still at the scene, the male is still there [on the roof].

“Negotiators are at the scene and are trying to talk the man down, in conjunction with the other emergency services.”
