Benwell driver sparked police chase because 'he didn't know they who they were'
A truck driver who led police on a chase claimed he didn’t know who they were, despite their flashing blue lights. Noman Asim took the officers on a short pursuit through residential streets in Newcastle’s west end one evening in October. Dash cam footage showed the 27-year-old failing to slow at junctions and increasing his speed in order to evade capture as he travelled along Ellesmere Road, the West Road and Gowland Avenue, in Benwell.
A court heard that Asim, who had two passengers in his white truck, eventually pulled over outside of his uncle’s house and was arrested. He appeared before magistrates in North Tyneside on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to one count of driving without due care and attention and one of failing to stop for a police officer. Prosecutor, Clare Irving, said it was around 9.40pm on October 12 this year that an unmarked police car began following Asim.
Ms Irving added: “The vehicle is followed and you can see the defendant make various manoeuvres. The defendant was still sat in the driving seat of the vehicle when he did eventually pull over and the police approached.
“The defendant said he didn’t realise they were police and were asking him to stop. “However, you can see blue lights flashing in the darkness on the footage.
“Two other occupants in the vehicle made-off on foot.” The court heard that Asim, of Croydon Road, in Arthur’s Hill, Newcastle, had previous convictions but not of a similar nature. Kash Khan, defending, said the two other occupants in the car were friends of Asim and had ran-off to get his uncle.
“At first, he’s stopping an junctions and indicating and, at that point, everything is totally fine,” the solicitor continued. “It’s only when the lights are illuminated that he speeds up and drives off. “Once the lights are illuminated, he panics and drives off to his uncle’s address where he knows there’s CCTV cameras. “It’s only when the officers get out that he realises they’re police.”
Magistrates fined Asim GBP110 and ordered him to pay GBP85 costs and a GBP32 victim surcharge.
He was also given three penalty points.
