Lorry driver dies on M5

A lorry driver has died after ‘suffering a medical emergency’ behind the wheel on the M5. The HGV smashed into barriers at J1 ( West Bromwich ) on Friday, November 20. Police and medics were called out just before 7am and found a by-stander giving the driver CPR.

But sadly nothing could be done to save the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “When crews arrived, they found a man, who was the driver of the lorry, in a critical condition with bystander CPR already in progress. “Crews took over treatment, with the critical care paramedic administering advanced life support to the patient. “Unfortunately, despite the best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”

The northbound carriageway was closed for several hours in the aftermath of the crash between Junction 1 for West Bromwich and the M6 at Junction 8.

However the M5 northbound link to the M6 will remain closed for some time as extensive barrier repairs are needed.

West Midlands Police has been approached for comment.
