Section of A42 closed as lorry sheds cardboard following crash

A long stretch of road near Swadlincote is closed after a lorry carrying cardboard boxes was involved in a collision. Hundreds of pieces of cardboard were seen littering the A42 on the northbound side of the busy route The section of the road between Junction 11 signposted for Burton and Junction 12 for Ashby is currently closed due to the collision involving a lorry and a “tanker-type vehicle”.

Diversions are in place from Junction 11. The incident was reported to Leicestershire police at 11.30am this morning and the road remains closed while the stretch of road is cleared. The central reservation barrier was also damaged during the incident.

The lorry was left with its side curtain ripped back and boxes spilled from the truck onto the road. Highways England confirmed that traffic officers, maintenance crews and recovery were at the scene after the crash. It says it is unclear how long the road will be closed.

One ambulance was called on the scene along with a police presence after the incident happened. In a social media update from Highways England, a photo of one of the lorries was posted on Twitter. The post read: “Here is an image from the scene.

As you can see this will take some time to clear up.

“Rest assured that we are working closely with the fire brigade, ambulance service, police, and recovery contractors to get the road reopened as quickly as we can.”
