Tormented mum of tragic Harry Dunn hopes Joe Biden win will finally bring justice

The mum of Harry Dunn says Joe Biden’s victory has given her new hope in her fight for justice over her son’s death – because the new US President lost his own child in a tragic road accident. Charlotte Charles admitted her spirits went “off the edge of a cliff” when first exit polls suggested Donald Trump might hang on to power. But she is now hopeful the new president will order former CIA operative Anne Sacoolas to face a UK court.

Mr Biden’s first wife Neilia and 13-month-old daughter Naomi were killed in a crash a week before Christmas 1972. His two sons, Hunter and Beau also suffered serious injuries when the family’s car was hit by a truck as they went to buy a Christmas tree.

Beau died from a brain tumour five year ago. Charlotte, who is preparing herself for a long-awaited judicial review at the High Court next week, told the Sunday Mirror: “Seeing Joe Biden voted in as president has given me new hope.

“He understands what it’s like to hear words no parent should ever hear. “He gets it – I just hope he isn’t scared to overturn any decisions that President Trump has made that he doesn’t agree with.” Harry, 19, died when a car driven by Sacoolas collided with his motorbike near RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire, in August last year.

Sacoolas later returned to the US, claiming her job gave her diplomatic immunity. She was charged in December with causing death by dangerous driving but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was refused in January. The US State Department has since insisted that decision “is final”.

Charlotte said: “We’re already in contact with senior people in the Democratic Party in Washington, who have been incredibly supportive. “And we have a contact with Team Biden and they seem very approachable. I hope I’ll get to meet him as soon as it’s safe to travel.”

The Crown Prosecution Service called this week for Sacoolas to “physically” return to the UK to face trial.

In September her lawyers issued a statement saying she drove on the “wrong side of the road for 20 seconds” before the fatal crash and suggested she would consider a virtual trial. Charlotte met Donald Trump in the Oval Office in October last year – when he repeatedly tried to push her to let Sacoolas join them. Charlotte said: “Trump was hell-bent on getting us to see her.

He kept pushing and pushing and wouldn’t let it go. “He said, ‘I want you to meet her, she wants to meet you, this is what we should all do’.”

She added: “He’s human but he doesn’t act human. I don’t believe Trump would ever have voluntarily sent her back.”

Charlotte revealed Harry’s old jacket, gloves, toothbrush and hair wax are all still where he left them the day he died.

She said: “When we get justice, Harry’s things will be moved – but for now they’re staying where they are.

Not having justice torments me.”
