A3029 Brunel Way crash: Updates after Ashton Gate collision

A serious accident has closed one of the major routes in the centre of Bristol tonight. Two cars were involved in a serious collision on the Brunel Way overpass in the Cumberland basin area. Police and ambulances attended the scene of the accident and the flyover is expected to be closed for several more hours.

Motorists are being advised to avoid the A3029 Brunel Way to Ashton Gate which is closed in both directions. The road is closed from where it goes over the River Avon between the A370 Brunel Way to A4 Hotwell Road and there are social media images of numerous blue lights on the small stretch of road. Avon and Somerset Police said: “A road closure is in place affecting Brunel Way in Bristol following a serious collision which happened shortly after 7.30pm this evening (Saturday 9 January)

“Motorists are advised to avoid the area.” They have not send anything about casualties but have classed the crash as “serious”

Teresa James was on her way home from work when she saw the accident and knew it was serious. She said: “I was coming home from a shift at Southmead Hospital and emergency services flew past me.

Traffic website Inrix reported at 9pm: “A3029 Brunel Way in both directions closed due to serious accident from A370 Brunel Way to A4 Hotwell Road.

“The road is shut heading over the River Avon.”
