Free online lessons in everything from CPR to spotting a dodgy boiler

A series of free online classes which look at everything from checking your boiler is safe to administering CPR are available. The project, entitled Safe + Sound has been set up by Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service with the aim of supporting communities across the region during the pandemic. The lessons first ran during the first lockdown and are aimed at all age groups, including children.

They look at topics like how to avoid knife crime, drug and alcohol awareness, how to use a defibrillator, and even emotional well-being. The first session happened today, Thursday, January 7, and featured safety talks from Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, Stoke on Trent City Council and Staffordshire Police. The sessions will be available to catch up on on the fire service’s website.

Fire service education manager Helen Wood said: “Safe+Sound workshops include topics such as fire safety, what to do in an emergency (CPR, DRS ABC, recovery position etc.), drug and alcohol awareness, road and truck safety, personal safety (internet and online safety), water safety, rail safety and emotional wellbeing.” The scheme went online at the start of the first lockdown in March 2020, and has carried on during school term time through 2020, and is now resuming in 2021. Ms.

Wood said before the pandemic hit schools and the community would visit the fire stations where firefighters would give lessons but during lockdown “we came up with the concept of online delivery of Safe+Sound to support families while children were being educated at home”. She said: “The plan was to follow a similar format to our in-person delivery with partners delivering their workshops all themed around supporting communities to make informed and positive lifestyle choices, improving their health, safety, and wellbeing.” “We had planned 40 weekly (term time only) LearnLive online programs, plus 4 ‘seasonal specials’.

These programmes were being used in schools, and as we are in lockdown again, they are also being used at home.”

All the sessions are running every Wednesday at 10am, with previous sessions available to catch up on at https://learnliveuk.com/safesound/
