Live A12 traffic: Updates as fuel spillage from multi-vehicle crash keep road shut for eighth hour
The A12 remains closed this afternoon (Wednesday, February 10) after a five-vehicle crash followed a lorry overturning earlier this morning. The southbound carriageway has been shut for more than eight hours, whilst Highways England teams clear a fuel spillage which resulted from earlier incidents. For a while, the northbound carriageway was also closed, as an air ambulance landed on the carriageway.
Police are appealing for more information following the five-vehicle accident, which sent two patients to hospital. The latest update from Highways England reads: “The A12 in Essex is closed southbound between J31 and J29 near Colchester due to an overturned HGV and a secondary incident involving a serious collision between multiple vehicles.

“We also have a lane 2 closure on the northbound carriageway due to barrier damage caused by the overturned HGV. “Emergency services including Essex Police are in attendance. “Recovery of the HGV has been completed and carriageway clear up is ongoing at the scene.
“The central reservation damage caused by the HGV has been made safe and the lane closure on the northbound is in the process of being removed. “Collision investigation work is ongoing for the serious collision and there is also an oil spillage that will need cleaning up across both lanes of the carriageway. “As a result of both of these incidents this closure is likely to remain in place through the early afternoon.”
Following sub-zero temperatures overnight, icy roads are continuing to cause traffic problems across the county. In line with Covid-19 lockdown rules, only essential journeys should be made this morning. If you do need to travel, it’s recommended you avoid the A12, or allow extra time for your journey.
