A person is in hospital after a lorry went up in flames in front of horrified drivers. The incident happened at around 4.15pm on Manchester Road in Partington on Wednesday afternoon. Video shared with the Manchester Evening News showed drivers slowing down as black smoke billowed up ahead.

Greater Manchester Rescue Service say crews rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze. A casualty has been taken to hospital with burn injuries.

The road was closed as emergency services dealt with the incident and there has been a large build up of traffic in the area as a result. Transport for Greater Manchester tweeted to ask drivers to avoid the area.

Bus services run by Stagecoach and Arriva are also affected. “Road is closed in both directions between Moss Lane and Central Road due to a vehicle fire,” TfGM said. Stagecoach tweeted: “255 Srv Due to a vehicle fire on the estate at Partington services terminating at Moss Lane Manchester Rd until further notice”

A spokesperson for GMFRS added: “At approximately 4.15pm on Wednesday, 30 th June, firefighters were called to reports of a vehicle fire on Manchester Road, in Partington.

“Two fire engines from Sale and Stretford stations quickly attended the scene. The fire involved a flatbed lorry. One casualty suffered burns and has been conveyed to hospital.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels and other specialist equipment to extinguish the fire.

Fire crews are also using foam to clear fuel on the carriageway and remain in attendance at this time.”
