Fuel tanker fire sparks road closure in Cornwall

Firefighters are battling a fully-laden petrol tanker which caught fire shortly before 6pm today. Police have said they are also attending the scene following reports of the petrol tanker catching fire along the A394. According to traffic site Inrix the road has been closed in both directions between the Gweek turn off in Edgcumbe and the B3297 Falmouth Road near Helston.

Devon and Cornwall Police’s Force Information Manager (FIM) confirmed that the fire was mainly contained to the cab of the vehicle and by the time firefighters arrived it was already fully alight. The FIM said the road was expected to remain closed for the time being. In addition, workers from Western Power and BT have also been called to the scene as the blaze is believed to have affected nearby poles carrying wires.

There have been no reports of injuries at this stage although the road is said to have been damage which is likely to cause further delays.

Police have urged motorists to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
