M5 reopens after serious collision

A stretch of the M5 has fully reopened more than nine hours after a fatal collision involving a car and a lorry in Devon. The incident happened near Tiverton and the southbound motorway was closed shortly before midnight and reopened today at around 7.45am (Tuesday, August 10), although one lane remained closed until 9.30am. It involved a silver Saab 93 and a Scania HGV around one mile south of junction 27.

The male driver of the Saab suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. : A38 and Toneway closure: Everything you need to know before year of roadworks begin The closure was due to recovery work and affected the carriageway between junction 27 for the A361 (Tiverton) and junction 28 for the A373 at Cullompton.

Traffic that was trapped within the closure was turned around by police and a diversion was in place via the A38 and B3181 towards Cullompton.

In the early hours of the morning, Highways England had warned that the closure could potentially continue into the early morning rush hour.
