The Weekly Update of Logistics News You Might Have Missed
UK – The positive response from the Department for Transport (DfT) to the trials of longer semi-trailers (LSTs), finding them to be safer, more economical and better for the environment has been warmly welcomed by the transport sector. LSTs remove significant numbers of lorry journeys by carrying the same amount of cargo in fewer trucks, thereby supporting government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan by reducing mileage, congestion and carbon emissions. Now the DfT will consider the use of LSTs on Britain’s roads outside trial conditions, and the longer, 15.65 metre vehicles could be rolled out sometime in 2022.
The Road Haulage Association (RHA) welcomed the response, along with expressing satisfaction with the news that the government is launching trials of heavier 48 tonne freight to help ship more cargo from road-only journeys onto rail. MD for policy and public affairs, Rod McKenzie said: “We have fully supported these [LST] trials since they were first proposed.
Many of our members took part in the trials and all were very positive about the concept. This is something we have long campaigned for so it’s good to see the Government has listened to the RHA and its members” UK – The United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) is supporting Tempus Novo, the award winning charity that helps serving and ex-offenders find sustainable employment and turn their lives around.
Warehouse work is ideal, and UKWA members including Clipper Logistics, XPO Logistics and Culina are already working successfully with Tempus Novo. Clare Bottle, UKWA CEO commented: “Tempus Novo has become an Associate Member of UKWA and we are pleased to promote the benefits for members of offering training and employment opportunities to ex-offenders.
Given the long-standing challenges that we face as an industry, I believe this could present a potential pool of workers who often respond by becoming the most hard working and loyal of employees.” CHINA – NORWAY – FINLAND – The first of two new wind turbine installation vessels (WTIV) is being built at the China Merchants Heavy Industry (Jiangsu) Co yard for Norwegian heavy transport and WTG installation contractor OHT ASA. The GustoMSC NG-14000XL-G design jack-up vessel is customised for offshore wind turbine installation and XL monopile foundations.
The vessel will feature a telescopic crane with a maximum capacity of 2,500 tonnes and a maximum lifting height of approximately 165 metres. Finnish technology group Wartsila has been selected to supply an integrated propulsion and dynamic positioning thruster solution, including the engines, a Wartsila NOx reducer emission abatement system, as well as steerable and tunnel thrusters to deliver optimum performancefor the craft. INDIA – International ship classification society, Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) says it has played an integral role in the drafting of the Inland Vessels Bill which was recently passed by Parliament.
The legislation is designed to promote economical and safe transportation and trade through India’s inland waters, by introducing a national framework and uniform applicability of rules and regulations. Under the new legislation, service providers and end users will no longer have to observe different compliance levels from one State to another. The new legislation stipulates higher standards to ensure safety of navigation, protection of life and cargo, prevention of environmental pollution, healthier trade practices, transparency and accountability of administrative mechanisms as well as the training and development of an efficient and skilled workforce.
SWEDEN – The Handheld Group, which manufactures rugged mobile computers suitable for busy logistics environments, has introduced the RS60 Ring Scanner, a comfortable hands-free scanning solution for use in warehouses, retail, distribution and other situations requiring highly mobile scanning. This device is the second in the newly introduced wearable line from Handheld following the SP500X ScanPrinter which was released earlier this month. With a connection range of 100 metres and up to 11 hours run time the fast scan can capture bar codes on the move and is dust and water resistant.
A video viewable HERE shows the advantages of the new device. SLOVENIA – EASTERN EUROPE – Studio Moderna is a home and living omnichannel retailer anchored in Central and Eastern Europe, delivering more than 6 million parcels to customers each year. However, with over 50 local carriers used across a number of fragmented markets, and speaking a diverse array of languages, providing customers with tracking information on the whereabouts of parcel deliveries is a complex challenge.
Now the company has employed the Shippeo platform which provides the group with a single centralised portal in which data from all of its many and varied carriers can be aggregated with the long-term aim to bring additional visibility to warehouse distribution and supplier flows, enhance productivity, optimise operations and reduce logistics costs. WORLDWIDE – Poor packing of containers and their contents leads to an estimated £6 billion in losses annually and, in striving for greater awareness and usage of the CTU Code in order to improve safety in the intermodal supply chain, the Cargo Integrity Group (CIG) has published its Quick Guide to the Code, and its accompanying Container Packing Checklist, in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish The five organisations, Container Owners Association (COA), Global Shippers Forum (GSF), International Cargo Handling Co-ordination Association (ICHCA International), TT Club and the World Shipping Council (WSC) that are collaborating in CIG are dedicated to achieving greater levels of safety, security and environmental performance within containerised global trade.
The production of a Quick Guide to the IMO/ILO/UNECE Code of Practice for Packing of Cargo Transport Units (CTU Code), along with a Checklist of actions required of those packing cargo in freight containers, is pivotal to achieving safe and secure transport.
Now the Quick Guide and Checklist have been translated from the original English into each of the other United Nations and is available HERE.
