Hairy Bikers Si King and Dave Myers serve up a gastronomic guide to Lancashire
The Hairy Bikers are back on screen and this time their food and drink odyssey is close to home as the two Geordies, Si King and Dave Myers are exploring the north of the UK on what they describe as their most personal journey yet. Although they’ll take in Yorkshire, Cumbria and the Peak District, they started their eight-part series in Lancashire last night (Thursday, September 24), a county they raved about for its striking landscape and first-class produce. Keen to highlight there is more to the gastronomic scene in the red rose county than Eccles cakes and hotpots, they visited the region’s world-class pubs and producers and here’s how you can too.

During their culinary caper, King and Myers stopped off at the chocolate-box village of Newton-in-Bowland to visit the Parkers Arms, a gastropub that’s received a raft of plaudits over the years. Owners Kathy and Stosie pride themselves on menus that are ‘short and seasonal’ and the Hairy Bikers tucked into one of their mouth-watering Curried Mutton Pies made with meticulous attention to detail.
The key to their success, Stosie explained, is the pastry that’s made with fat from local, aged and flavoursome meat. Homemade pies at their finest. Langden Grill Food Truck

If you fancy low-key al fresco dining then head to Langden Brook on the Trough Road in the Trough of Bowland, where you’ll find the unassuming Langden Grill Food Truck.
The Hairy Bikers described it as a “roadside gem” and enjoyed a traditional breakfast butty and a brew while savouring the views, but there’s more on offer than just eggs and sausage. The all-day truck serves all sorts of dishes, from burgers and Bajan fish to nachos and bakes. The perfect pitstop on a road trip through the region.
Mr Fitzpatrick’s Temperance Bar The Hairy Bikers are known for their love of a good pint, but during the episode, they droped by Mr Fitzpatrick’s in Rawtenstall, that’s entirely alcohol-free. Dating back to the late 19th century, it was once of many temperance bars that were founded as a way to promote abstinence but is now the last original one standing.
Run by Ashley, you can order guilt-free shots such as sarsaparilla, cream soda, dandelion and burdock, as well as milkshakes and cakes made with cordial cream cheese. Carron Lodge Lancashire’s known for its cheese, but Carron Lodge does it differently by rearing around 30 water buffalo on the family-run farm at Inglewhite.
Although buffalo cheese is typically associated with mozzarella, Carron Lodge produces an award-winning hard cheese, called Clothbound Inglewhite Buffalo, as well as a veined cheese, the Shipston Blue. Although you can’t visit the farm, they’re one of the UK’s biggest cheese wholesalers, so keep your eyes peeled at delis, food halls and cheese shops. Goosnargh Gin

Goosnargh Gin, close to the Forest of Bowland, is run by Richard and Rachel Trenchard who create their own recipes using a copper pot still and botanicals foraged from the nearby landscape. They also run a Gin School, which is how The Hairy Bikers wind up calling in to make their very own potent concoctions. Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery
Unlike many breweries, there are no formal tours of the working Kirkby Lonsdsale Brewery, which is named in honour of its location. Instead, the owners are happy to answer any questions you might have about the cask ales while you enjoy a drink in the rustic beer barn. There are typically always 20 different beers on the go, so the Hairy Bikers were in their element sampling the ales and stout ahead of making their own ale-laden pie.
Notarianni Ice Cream

The Hairy Bikers finished their road trip in Blackpool, and aside from a visit to the Pleasure Beach, make a beeline for the Notarianni Ice Cream shop, a Blackpool institution. Opened in 1928, the Italian family business has retained all the traditions, including the fact it only serves one flavour-vanilla.
Using the original recipe with milk from a local farm, the ice cream is made onsite and available every day of the week.
