Lorry driver suffers ‘serious injuries’ in crash with M6 bridge
A driver has suffered serious injuries after crashing into a bridge on the M6 this morning. Police confirmed that a HGV crashed into a bridge on the northbound carriageway of the M6 close to junction 17. Since the acciden t, shortly after 8am this morning (Tuesday, September 7), a section of the motorway between junction 17 and junction 18 has been closed for several hours.

A Cheshire police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8am on Tuesday 7 September police were called to reports of a collision on the M6. “The incident on the northbound carriageway near to Sandbach involves a HGV which has collided with a bridge. “One person is believed to have sustained serious injuries.
People have been stuck out on the M6 for over two hours. This is the scene looking down near J17 at Sandbach.
“As a result of the incident the northbound carriageway is currently closed between junctions 17 (Sandbach) and 18 (Middlewich). “The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.
“Local diversion are place but there are long delays and members of the public are advised to avoid the area if possible.” Highways England is encouraging drivers to avoid the area and instead follow diversions put in place. The crash has caused delays of more than two hours throughout the morning with eight miles of traffic.
A Highways England statement reads: “The M6 is closed northbound between J17 – J18 near Sproston Green due to a serious collision. “Police accident investigation in currently on going “This incident is causing delays of over 120 minutes above the normal travel time and 8.2 miles of congestion on approach to the northbound closure.
The diversion route is also very heavily congested. “The southbound carriageway has now been released after being held. There are 60 minutes of residual delays southbound and 7.3 miles of congestion.
“Please consider alternative routes where possible.” A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We thank passengers for their patience while trains are currently unable to run between Holmes Chapel and Crewe. “It’s after a bridge carrying the railway over the M6 was damaged during a road traffic accident this morning.
We’re working with National Highways and the emergency services to gain access to the bridge so our engineers can carry out safety inspections.
“While this work takes place we’d urge people to check National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information.”
