What to expect from The Tourist
In the glowing red heart of the Australian outback, a British man is pursued by a vast tank truck trying to drive him off the road. An epic cat and mouse chase unfolds and The Man later wakes in hospital, hurt, but somehow alive. Except he has no idea who he is.
With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback… From the team that brought you immensely popular mystery thrillers Baptiste, The Missing and Liar, BBC’s latest commission, The Tourist is a character-driven secrecy-fuelled Aussie twist on a classic whodunnit storyline, full of shocking, surprising and brutal turns.
Acclaimed writers Harry and Jack Williams, who share Emmy’s, Golden Globe awards as well as numerous BAFTA nominations for their television work, announced earlier this year that lead role, The Man, will be played by Jamie Dornan (The Fall; Fifty Shades of Grey). Speaking about what compelled him to take part in the upcoming series, which is set to commence on New Years Day at 9:00pm, Dornan, 39, explained: “It’s just mad!
There are so many threads in this journey. “With the premise of the script being this guy who’s lost his memory and is trying to piece everything together, everything’s being revealed to him at the same time that it’s being revealed to the audience. That keeps you intrigued.

“I think we’re all trying to do that as we stumble through life anyway, but this is on a much more heightened scale.
“The humour of it too, that’s something that was a big draw for me – finding something that marries dark humour and quite extreme drama too. It’s not often you get scripts that have all of that in one.” Joining Dornan in the big-name line-up will be Sydney-born actress Danielle Macdonald, best known for her roles in hit Netflix series’ Dumplin’ and Bird Box and set to play The Tourist’s earnest and eager local beat cop, Helen, assigned to help The Man uncover his secret past.

Describing her character’s relationship with Dornan’s, Macdonald revealed: “Instantly, there’s this beautiful connection, he trusts her straight away.
“When you wake up with no memory of who you are or about anything in your life, it’s going to be very difficult to trust someone and instantly they form a trust, and that carries throughout the show as they get to know each other for who they are and what they’ve been through.

“That trust just builds and grows and I really love their relationship, they go through every spectrum of everything, there is nothing that they don’t do in this.” Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line Of Duty, Roadkill) who is also set to play Luci, a waitress who’s swept into The Man’s journey for answers, added: “This story is unique and I’m excited to be a part of bringing it to life with this brilliant team. “I’m looking forward to adding to the thrilling mystery of these scripts with the wonderfully intriguing character of Luci.
It’s very exciting to be working on such a great project in Australia – it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Damon Herriman (Justified; Once Upon A Time in Hollywood) will play Agent Lachlan Rogers, one of the most highly regarded detective inspectors in Australia and leading Major Crime for the state police, who also winds up intertwined with his search. Hugo Weaving (The Lord Of The Rings) was originally cast in the inspector role but was forced to pull out due to scheduling commitments. Herriman gave viewers an insight into what they can expect from the upcoming series: “I think audiences will be entertained and they’re going to find it hard to watch one episode at a time because it’s going to be incredibly addictive.

“I think they’re going to be talking about it amongst each other and trying to work out, just as the characters in the show are, who this man is and where’s he come from and what his background is and who knows him and who doesn’t know him?
“There are so many elements of mystery.”
The six-episode series, which is guaranteed to leave you with some thought provoking existential questions, airs weekly from 1 January.
