Lorry fire near Luton causes closes M1 for seven hours
A lorry fire on the M1 caused miles of traffic on Monday (May 16), with the southbound carriageway seeing closures of almost seven hours. Lane closures were in place between Junction 11 and Junction 12.. The incident involved a lorry fire, photos of which have been seen by BedfordshireLive, and led to five miles of queuing traffic.
The road was initially fully closed from 2.20pm to 2.35pm. Traffic slowed on the other side as drivers slow down to have a look at the scene. At 2:40pm National Highways East tweeted: “There are currently 2 (of4) lanes closed on the #M1 southbound between J11-J10 near #Luton due to a vehicle fire.
Emergency services are at the location along with #TrafficOfficers. Please allow extra time for your journey as there is approx.

Traffic returned to normal shortly before 10pm.
