Parts of the UK hit by earthquake as residents feel tremor ‘shake the ground’

An earthquake has hit the parts of the UK with reports of furniture moving in people’s homes as the earth shook below them. The British Geological Survey confirmed the tremor measuring 3.8 on the richter scale. They also confirmed the quake was 8km below ground and largely in the Wem and Shropshire area.

Parts of Nottinghamshire and Staffordshire also felt the earth tremor with affected areas including Long Eaton, Shrewsbury, Telford, Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent. One homeowner, who lives in Shrewsbury, said: “I felt the house shake from side to side for about three or four seconds. I was sat on the sofa and the whole room was moving.

“I asked my partner if that was an earthquake and he said it was that or an explosion.” Pam Newall tweeted: “Felt like a giant jumped on the ground. #earthquake #shrewsbury “

Leigh-Anne tweeted: “Earthquake felt in Shrewsbury England today! That was a weird experience! #earthquake ” Twitter account Love Telford said: “I heard a rumble and felt the desk shake.

The fact others have asked the question makes me think it must have been.” Another took to social media to say she felt her bed shake.

Michelle Jupp said: “That was a real WTF moment, Sat on my bed and it starts shaking then realised the whole house was shaking. It was over fast & I was like, did we just have an earthquake?

“Jumped on Facebook & apparently yes. I’m in Wem & saw people saying it was felt in Shrewsbury & Whitchurch too.” Elizabeth Wilkinson wrote: “Yep my son felt the house move TF1 area Telford #Earthquake I just feel weirded and queasy!”

Julie Williams, from, Wem described hearing a shudder rumble across her room. She said: “All I heard a thud and a shudder through the bedroom floor.” “I knew straight away what it was, I was just like, get downstairs and get out.”

“It shocked me,” she said. “My legs went to jelly.” Andy Semourson, who lives in Whitmere, said his whole house creaked and his furniture wobbled. “It really shook the house,” he said. “[I’ve] never felt one as strong.”

Earthquake monitoring site Volcano Discovery also confirmed seismic activity was recorded. They said: “We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Telford, England, United Kingdom on 30 May 2022 (GMT) at approximately 14:35 GMT.

“There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of this possible quake. If confirmed, we can expect more accurate data to emerge in the next few minutes.

“The location, magnitude and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model.

They are temporary until our AllQuakes monitoring service receives more exact scientific data from a national or international seismological agency.”
